Does anyone have any experience with the Dunlop Sport Maxx RT 2 or the Bridgestone Potenza S001? There’s a few reviews of the Bridgestones but barely any on the Dunlops.

This is for the Skoda?
Edit: nevermind that, see you’re dumping the Skoda. Alfa cheap rubbish car?

Dunlop Direzza ZII* is better.

I would guess that the lack of reviews on the Dunlop are due to it being a new tire. I don’t even see it listed on Tire Rack’s website.
If you’re looking for a high quality performance tire you should also consider the Michelin Pilot Super Sport

Actually the Skoda, it’s about to get 100 more torques and 45 more horses at the end of April and my Chinese Evergreen branded tyres are getting slung. It has 350 Nm now and is fairly poor in the wet on this rubber, and ‘spirited’ driving is a no-no.

Ah, a “creative” fix for the PD engine woes in the works, then. Chinese tires are sort of a compromise thing, I know it well.

I’ve had the Michelin Pilot Exalto 2s before and I found they wore really quickly, but I know that’s not indicative of their other tyres. How do the Super Sports fare in the wet? I’m in Blighty so you know why I ask.

Pilot Super Sports will have the best wet traction above all other tires except for maybe the Continental DW.

Creative insofar as: Gut the fucking DPF, tell the car it never had a DPF and it was all just a mad dream, while simultaneously adding more powerz with an enchanted map or something.

They're also nearly double the cost of the Dunlops and Bridgestones in my size. Shame.

The ZII* is a street-tire class track tire, which is totally different from so-called max performance tires like originally posted. Sure it’s got more dry grip but it’ll wear out sooner and won’t do as well in the rain.

I’m also potentially in the market for tires in this class. If you don’t want to pay Michelin PSS prices, check out the Bridgestone S-04. I’m also kinda waiting to see reviews on the new Kumho PS91. This initial report from an E90 M3 owner is encouraging, but I’m holding out for more actual test data.

Not that different. Max summer performance like the PSS is just the best overall tire. You get the best wet traction along with good amount of dry traction. This leads to very little difference between dry and wet grip, which is what you want on the street.
But for people who want real street performance, they need extremes like ZII* and Proxes. Push your car in the dry, and just take it 9/10ths when it’s wet.

I can’t immediately find the S-04 for sale in 225/40R18, but I’ll keep an eye out as i’m not swapping until end of April. If the review on those Kumhos is accurate they sound pretty good, although I’d always hesitate to take one persons oppinion on £400 of rubber :)

I think you’re understating the difference.
Extreme performance (Tire Rack’s term for tires like the ZII*) tires, compared to max performance tires, have the best dry grip, less wet grip, less tread life, more noise, and worse ride.
Choosing one or the other is a set of tradeoffs. One is not objectively better than the other.

As Bytemite mentioned, they are actually quite good. Probably the best street oriented tire that you can buy.

I didn’t realize they cost so much more in Australia.

Not sure where you’d get the S-04 in your size in your country, but here in the US they’re available from Tire Rack. They do lots of testing and have nice detailed reports on stuff. It’s not the be-all, end-all with research but a good starting point.
I’m on the fence with the S-04 because they supposedly feel similar to the PSS but their pace on a track isn’t quite as good, and actually doesn’t quite hold up to the Continental ExtremeContact DW.
I’ve had a set of those Conti DW’s before and they have plenty of grip, but they’re intended to be a more comfy and quiet max performance tire with excellent wet traction. They perform that job very well, but you give up a fair amount of turn-in response sharpness, and they tend to go greasy after fast driving more quickly than some other summer tires I’ve had. If that’s a tradeoff that’s appealing to you, they’re worth a look, but I’m looking for something else.
I’m not really a track rat, so for my purposes the S-04 could be totally fine, but I’m taking a wait-and-see to see if those Kumhos more closely match the track performance of the PSS.

The S001 is a tyre we don’t get any complaints about at work, admittedly the people that buy them don’t have a whole lot of choice as it’s the main runflat for BMW sedans. But customers only say good things about them. Frankly I’d take Bridgestone over Dunlop every day of the week, but for a performance tyre I’d be looking at Pilot Sport 4s myself.

A lot of people pointing out Michelin’s offerings. If the price is right I’ll definitely look into them. Thanks
